The large, vocal Abert's Squirrel inhabits the Ponderosa Pine forests of the southwestern United States, including the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Unlike many other squirrels, the Abert's squirrel continues to forage throughout the winter rather than store food and/or hibernate. It is also known as the tassel-eared squirrel. It has long tufts or tassels of fur on its ears.
