The Grand Canyon History Symposium has become a well-established and anticipated tradition, springing from an idea in 2001 between two historians, one on either side of the Grand Canyon. It has always been a cooperative venture with the National Park Service, Grand Canyon Conservancy (formerly known as Grand Canyon Association), and what was then the Grand Canyon Pioneers Society. Begun in 1984 honoring the memories of Grand Canyon's early pioneer families, in 2002 it became the Grand Canyon Historical Society to more fully embrace pre- and post-pioneer and Native American history. The fourth symposium in November of 2016 occurred slightly earlier than every five years to celebrate the centennial of the Organic Act establishing the National Park Service as a governing body.
In this fourth collection of Proceedings papers, Celebrating 100 Years of the National Park Service, almost half of the works at least partly address park management. May concern underrepresented groups, through biographies of well-known personages, including pioneers, and lesser-known individuals also will entice you with their stories. One is by a pioneer family member detailing the effort to build the Shrine of the Ages, a multi-purpose building where events, such as the symposium, can be held. The next symposium will be even sooner, February 2019, in the week before Founders Day of the 26th. It will be another celebration, a fun time for the Centennial of Grand Canyon National Park.
