Join us for a virtual Book Club event with Kevin Fedarko, author of A Walk in the Park: The True Story of a Spectacular Misadventure in the Grand Canyon. From the author of the beloved bestseller The Emerald Mile, A Walk in the Park is a rollicking and poignant account of an epic 750-mile odyssey, on foot, through the heart of America’s most magnificent national park and the grandest wilderness on earth. The tale narrates the odyssey Fedarko and his best friend Pete McBride undertook to transect the entire length of the Grand Canyon, a feat billed by the handful of experts who have managed to complete it as “the toughest hike in the world.”

The discussion and Q&A will be moderated by Rich Rudow, a Grand Canyon Conservancy board member who helped advise Fedarko and McBride throughout their journey and even joined to help the two friends complete one of the most challenging sections of their thru-hike. Rich will be asking Kevin questions submitted by our live audience, as well as a few of his own.

While we encourage reading the book before the event, it is not required. A Walk in the Park: The True Story of a Spectacular Misadventure in the Grand Canyon is available for purchase on GCC's website.

Rich Rudow in the depth of a slot canyon

About the Moderator

Rich Rudow is a Grand Canyon adventurer who fell into the abyss at age 25 on a rafting trip his wife gave him as a gift. Thirty-four years later, he has yet to escape the magnetic pull of exploration in the vast remote areas of the National Park. In 2015, he became one of the few people to traverse the length of the Grand Canyon, staying beneath the rim deep inside the three-dimensional maze for 57-days before successfully emerging near Lake Mead. Eight years ago, Rich picked up a professional camera determined to vividly showcase the remote beauty of the Grand Canyon in order to inspire more Americans to protect the place. After more than 1,300 days exploring below the rim, he has become one of the foremost experts on the Grand Canyon backcountry.
